The Man of Wishes

I know a man who is always wishing. He wishes for happiness, he wishes for a really hot and kind hearted wife, he wishes for a different, more exciting life. But the man of wishes is not a man of action and so his life remains mediocre, single, and the same.

The man of wishes has wonderful ideas and good intentions but they persist as thoughts in his head. He is full of unharnessed potential. He wishes for grand things that he'll never achieve because he'll never exert the energy required.

What would change the man of wishes into a man of action? What changes men of action into idle dreamers? Big life events that, by definition change the trajectory of someone's life forever. How many super hero plot lines are developed from this theme? Loser kid, doctor, or scientist gets blasted by radiation or space rocks and BAM! they're single handedly saving the city from evil.

But real life doesn't create super heroes. A desire to break the mediocrity of life, however, has the power to effect permanent change. Often, the biggest obstacle to change is fear. Changing routines and making life anew can be risky and scary business. Contrarily, living in the rut of mediocrity, the land of wishing, isn't marvelous or glamorous, but it can be comfortable.

A man or woman of wishes must confront and best fear and then exert the energy necessary to achieve his or her goals. The task isn’t always easy, but the payoff is very rewarding. Once one fear is conquered the next fear is not quite so difficult to overcome. The continued experience of achievement becomes a sort of addiction. The old lifestyle is discarded for the new. Soon, there is no more wishing, only goal setting, working, and achieving.

Man of wishes, go make your world. You’re the only one who can do it.
